Benefits of Becoming a Pastry Chef

How many times have you sat at your desk in the middle of your cubicle and thought, “just what am I doing here?” Obviously paychecks are important for various reasons – no one would argue that. But what if you could earn a paycheck and love your job? What if you could earn that same paycheck with a skill that transcends that boring desk and that suffocating cubicle? Sounds unrealistic, right? For many pastry chefs, this is not a fantasy, but instead their day-to-day life.

In order to gain employment as a pastry chef, you will most likely first have to obtain some sort of education, whether it is a program aimed at a diploma or a certificate. These programs, often times lasting one year, give you the foundation and basic skills needed to be a successful pastry chef. Additionally, you will have the guidance of a skilled faculty who have already had success in the culinary business. Many may act as mentors, guiding you to become a better pastry chef while teaching you important tricks of the trade.

What is perhaps the most important trait of a pastry chef, though – beyond formal education or training – is a love of the craft. To truly be a great pastry chef, just like any other profession, you must love what you do. If you are the type of person who feels at ease over a hot oven, or happiest while slicing cookie dough, this might be the career for you.

Once you become accredited as a pastry chef, you have numerous job opportunities. Beyond simply working in a bakery, pastry chefs are also able to seek employment in restaurants, patisseries and cafeterias. Or perhaps you might seek a different path, working as a food critic for a newspaper, a culinary school teacher, or maybe even the Executive Chef for the President! No matter what you choose, you can be sure that you will be paid handsomely – experienced pastry chefs make an average of over sixty thousand dollars a year.

And did I mention perhaps the most obvious benefit? While business people might take home paperwork and teachers might take home tests to grade, pastry chefs bring home leftovers! So next time you are sitting at that same desk in the middle of that same cubicle, consider all of the benefits of becoming a pastry chef.
